What type of mask to wear?

Healthy living has taken centre stage since the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020. Exercising plays a crucial role in lowering risks and boosting health and wellbeing but at the moment, many of us are having to work out in masks. In this guide, we’ll discuss how to exercise safely and provide tips to help you choose the right mask.

Exercising with a mask

After over a year of restrictions and lockdowns, many of us are used to grabbing a mask along with our keys and phones as we head out of the door. Wearing a mask has become second nature but it can be difficult to adjust to using masks when you’re exercising. Many people might have concerns about the safety of wearing a mask when they run, work out in the gym or play sports and some masks are better suited to physical activity than others.

Leading an active lifestyle is hugely beneficial for improving mental and physical health and lowering the risk of Covid-19 complications. If you’re worried about using a mask while exercising, research studies should provide peace of mind. Studies show that wearing a mask while playing sports and working out is safe. Researchers have found that using a mask does not have a negative impact on heart rate, respiration or oxygen levels (

Running is a very popular activity and many people have taken up jogging outdoors during lockdowns when gyms and other sports facilities have been shut. It is possible to run outdoors in open areas without a mask but if you feel safer running with a mask, lightweight, comfortable, breathable masks will enable you to appreciate the experience and enjoy peace of mind.

What type of masks should I wear for exercise?

The range of masks has grown rapidly in the last 12 months and there is now an incredibly diverse selection to choose from. You can exercise safely in any type of approved face mask but some might be more comfortable than others and there are advanced options that provide additional benefits and features.

Cloth, polyester and non-woven masks are ideal for short exercise sessions and are preferable to surgical masks, which can break down due to excess moisture and sweat. The CDC recommends buying masks with at least two layers and avoiding masks with valves. It’s also an excellent idea to carry a spare with you. Once you’ve finished exercising, you can then change your mask to travel home or go back to the office.

If you are a very active individual and your performance really matters, you might be interested in masks from AirPop. Since 2015, AirPop has designed masks for performance at high intensity, comfort and durability, whilst providing unrivalled filtration with an adaptive fit and high breathability.

Originally designed for athletes and runners in the world’s most polluted cities, the AirPop Light SE mask is one of the best-selling masks on the market at the moment and their innovative use of materials and ergonomic design is a wearing experience in a class of its own. There are other options out there but it’s best to check that the mask meets some performance standards for particle filtration and breathability or risk being disappointed and unprotected.

AirPop filtration efficiency is over 99.3% and it provides two-way protection, benefiting the user and others they interact with. The brand has won a host of awards for its innovative masks, including an International Design Excellence Award and a Reddot award.

AirPop masks have been spotted on the French President and the Arrow McLaren racing team and they feature in Amanda Kloots’ workouts. Kloots is a well-known fitness instructor, TV presenter and influencer. AirPop masks are also used by athletes from the Dallas Mavericks, including Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson.

To summaries, leading an active lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing Covid-19 complications but exercising with a mask can take a little getting used to. Research indicates that it is safe to work out while wearing a mask and it shouldn’t impact your performance. When choosing a mask, it’s beneficial to opt for lightweight masks that facilitate easy breathing and promote comfort. Now that the Covid vaccine is being rolled out for adults across the world, there has also been talk of the possibility of a mandatory vaccine for children. This is due to growing concern about the outbreaks of Covid-19 in babies and children, particularly in Brazil. According to a recent article in NBC News , over two thousand deaths have been reported in children in Brazil. It’s also becoming apparent that children may not be at zero-risk of Covid-19, which has been a common misconception. Trials in children are still underway, and a mandatory vaccine is not quite ready yet.

How To Follow Covid Safety Guidelines While Still Having A Fun Summer Of Freedom
By Anna Gallagher 17 May, 2021
During the pandemic, certain safety measures have been put in place all over the world to prevent the spread of Covid-19. These have included social distancing and the encouragement of face coverings and other forms of PPE. Recently Scientists have warned that the current protocols may need updating, however. According to a report by The Lancet , Covid has been shown to be predominantly airborne. This means it’s possible for it to be spread via airborne transmission, and we need to take extra precautions to avoid this.Airborne transmissions occur when an individual inhales aerosols produced when an infected person exhales, speaks, sneezes or coughs. According to The Lancet report, there are particles of the coronavirus disease in the air, or aerosols. These have been given different names throughout the pandemic such as droplets or droplet nuclei, but they are all essentially aerosols that can be inhaled, regardless of size or distance. These can even enter ventilation filters and air ducts.

The international travel ban was one of the most significant safety measures put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Now that the vaccines are being rolled out globally and restrictions are starting to be eased, we can also expect the gradual lifting of the travel ban. There will still be complications, however, as it depends on the country and the destination. Many governments are also encouraging vaccine passports for safer travel.
